THE RIVER STILL REMEMBERS- OSUN FESTIVAL, OSOGBO (1972)

It was the 18th of August, -1972. The Osun rose slowly over the dense groves of Osogbo, filtering through the sacred forest like a golden whisper from the gods. Drums had begun to speak, not in words, but in rhythm, in heartbeat, in memory

It was the climax of the sacred eight-day ritual known across Yoruba land as the Osun-Osogbo Festival. And on this day the town was no longer, just Osogbo. It was a kingdom between two worlds, between the soil and the spirit, where tradition danced openly with the living.

Thousands of worshippers, pilgrims, onlookers, and initiates lined the ancient paths, their garments painted in whites, indigo and ash. Woman wore beads that clinked with every steps, man held staff carved with symbols order than colonial that once flew here. And above all, music and chanting, there was hope. Hope for healing. Hope for children. Hope that the river goddess, OSUN, would pass through the sacred forest again and remember the names of her children.

In the distance, the people began to part like a sea before a divine wind.

She came forward, the arugba, a young lady, chosen by the gods, her head steady under the weight of the sacred calabash. Her footsteps were not just steps they were rituals. Every moves, every breath, carried centuries of prayer and offering guarded by the devotees of Sango, Ogun and Obatala.

She would work the path of the river.

And the river will listen.

Behind her, masquerade spun in the air like spirits loosed from bottle. Egungun danced like echos of ancestors returned. Hunters bears their drum and fired  a ceremonial shot into the sky, Salutes to Orisha, to history, to bloodlines.

Then came the women, mothers who once wept at empty cradles, now dancing with tied to their backs . They did not need to speak with them. The river had answered them. Their womb were now full, their breasts carried milk of answered prayers. They sang praises to Osun, the goddess of fertility, love, and compassion. The one who could turn bitter water sweet.

And the men? The sons of the soil chanted with pride. “Iya mi Osun, a gbe wa o!” , Our mother Osun, protect us always.

The calabash was offered. The crown knelt.

And though she did not speak aloud, the wind shifted. The water rippled. A bird flew upward through the canopy as if sent by heaven. The people rejoiced, dancing as though the gods had stepped down into their midst.

The day, cameras rolled and history was caught on film. But the real story was never in the footage.

It was in the heartbeat of the drummers.

It was in the trembling voice of an old priestess who had seen 60 festivals before. It was in the way the trees leaned to listen.

And even now- over 50 years later- those who walk that sacred path say they still hear the drums.

Because gods never die.

They just wait by the riverside.

NUC MOVES TO TACKLE ENERGY CRISIS IN VARSITIES

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has taken steps in the efforts at proffering energy solutions to Nigerian Universities which, according to the commission, is an important missing link in the nation's university system.

The executive secretary of NUC, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, who noted that gas-powered energy system, will be the best for the university system, has accordingly held a metting with the management of Midstream and Downstream Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) on how to ensure alternative energy supplies in Nigerian universities.

He noted that there was a need to resolve the energy crisis in Nigerian universities following the epileptic power supply in most parts of the country, affecting the smooth running of the institutions.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the meeting was held with a delegation led by the executive director of MDGIF, Mansur Kuliya.

Professor Rasheed added that energy constituted a critical component of running a university and that to live in the uncertainty of having light constantly, was something we had forcefully embraced in the nation’s university campuses over the past decades.

He told the delegation that when he was a student, it was rare for light to be taken, adding that today one could not guarantee when light would be available in a semester.

He noted that so many initiatives and experiments had been undertaken over the past few years with the most recent one being the RED intervention for alternative power (solar) besides plants in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, and University of Lagos (UNILAG).

He disclosed that these were the only ones with the proposed gas power plant, stressing that the other universities involved were solar-driven.

The NUC boss said that the government had spent billions of naira to put power in the nation’s universities campuses, but the problem had always being compounded.

He cited the example of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) which installed one centralised solar plant of 3.6 KVA and made it an integrated one with diesel, national grid and solar power with 2,160 batteries.

He said that the vice chancellor of the institution informed him that he needed N900m to replace the batteries for an optimal usage.

Rasheed explained further that despite the huge amount of money being spent on the project; “this infrastructure did not guarantee light in the university for 24 hours, not even for 14hrs, as the institution was buying a truck of 40,000 litres in a week, which according to him, was unsustainable.

He noted that that the last two trucks were bought for N39 million.

The NUC boss recounted an incident that happened two years ago when the World Bank delegated an assessment team which came back to report that the students told them that they usually stay indoors at night because there was no light for them to study and that they could be attacked under the influence of darkness.

He also lamented that darkness was a precursor for crime, saying that most university campuses are always in darkness, and to change the narrative will require money as energy cannot be accessed free.

According to him, nothing is free any more in the government circle, noting that to have an acceptable, affordable and reliable access to electricity in our campuses; the gas powered energy system might be the answer.

He said that it was on this premise that the executive director, MDGI, Mansur Kaliya approached him with a proposal to invite some vice chancellors of some universities to explore the possibility of migrating this form of energy to the universities.

He recounted that both teams agreed to bring the consultants to come and interface with the vice chancellors to explore the possibility of migrating to this form of energy.

Professor Rasheed told the visitors that the role of NUC was to mediate and ensure smooth and speedy take- off of the project, explaining that the pilot scheme would comprise the first six and other seven generation universities along with some selected universities that have distinguished themselves.

In his remarks, Alhaji Mansar Kaliya, expressed delight for the warm reception accorded them and congratulated the Executive Secretary on the giant strides recorded in the Nigerian University System (NUS).

He told the NUC management that the Petroleum Industrial Act (PIA) of 2021 Section 52 established the Midstream & Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund.

He noted that MDGIF was established to open gas industries and infrastructure, adding that since the advent of crude oil in Nigeria investment was done mainly on hydrocarbons.

He said the gas reserve in Nigeria was enough to cater for the energy needs of the country and Africa at large, saying that the investment universities would be able to generate 24hrs of reliable electricity.

He added if the project was properly implemented in two years, Nigerian Universities would be able to generate enough electricity to meet the needs of the university system.

Ronaldo out of Nigeria friendly

Portuguese Player Christiano Ronaldo

Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo is suffering a stomach bug and will be left out of the team’s World Cup warm-up friendly against Nigeria on Thursday, according to his coach Fernando Santos.

Ronaldo gave an explosive interview to Piers Morgan’s show on TalkTV this week in which he criticised Manchester United and said he had no respect for the coach Erik ten Hag, who has not relied on him much this season.

The striker, 37, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, will not train on Wednesday because of the illness, which has started amid the controversy caused by his interview.

“He is suffering from gastroenteritis and will not train today for this reason,” Santos told a press conference in Lisbon. He won’t be ready (to face Nigeria), he’s resting, as you know, gastritis takes a lot out of players.”

The coach said Ronaldo’s interview was not sanctioned by Portugal but did not need to be either, and that it had nothing to do with the national team.

Once recovered, Ronaldo is set to feature in his fifth and potentially final World Cup, with Portugal opening their campaign against Ghana on November 24, before games against Uruguay and South Korea. The talismanic striker and his country have never won the competition but did triumph at Euro 2016 and won the Nations League in 2019.

El-Rufai commends military for killing terrorist leader

Troops have killed a notorious terrorists’ commander, Dogo Maikasuwa, in a forest at the Gengere-Kaso general area, around the Chikun and Kajuru boundaries in Kaduna State. Dogo Maikasuwa, it was gathered, led series of deadly operations in Chikun and Kajuru local government areas of the state, worst hit by terrorist activities over the years.

The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, who disclosed this on Friday, said the notorious terrorists’ commander and his foot soldiers ran into an ambush laid by the troops where he met his end.

According to the commissioner, scores of ‘Dogo Maikasuwa’s foot soldiers escaped into the forest with gunshot injuries.

“The other bandits escaped with gun wounds. It was further gathered that one of them died from injuries sustained in the fierce battle, with his remains carried away by other fleeing elements,” he said.

Items recovered from the terrorists, according to the commissioner, were one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, five rounds of ammunition, two motorcycles and one set of camouflage military fatigues.

The development, the commissioner said, excited the state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, who praised the gallantry of the troops.

The commissioner said, “After an era of terrorising citizens and evading security forces, the Kaduna State Government can authoritatively report that the notorious bandit commander known as Dogo Maikasuwa has met his end.

“The development was made known in an operational feedback from security agencies. Painstaking investigations revealed atrocities he carried out with impunity in hard-to-reach locations.

“Dogo Maikasuwa, also known as ‘Dogo Maimillion’ led series of attacks and kidnappings of citizens plying the Kaduna-Kachia Road, and in communities within Chikun and Kajuru LGAs. He was one of the deadliest bandits leading other elements in terrorising citizens of these general areas.”
